Adelaide Hockey Club Policies

While we are all fine upstanding citizens, sometimes some things can get a bit out of hand.  To make sure that we all know the “ground rules” for the Club, we have developed some Codes of Conduct:

Code of Conduct – Games

Code of Conduct – Social

Junior Competition Code of Behaviour for Parents and Players

Volunteering for 2010 - Bar, Club Days, Dinners and Umpiring

This year the Club has decided to focus on trying to ensure that all activities for which we need volunteers are divided up evenly.  We also have an obligation to improve our umpiring, but we acknowledge that some people consider their time would be better spent elsewhere.

So this is the deal:  each team is assigned the same total number of volunteering hours, but the higher grades have more emphasis on umpiring and the lower grades have more emphasis on running the bar, Club Days and dinners.  Each team can decide how to divvy up the time amongst its players.

Junior teams are also asked to provide volunteers on a (reduced) equal-hours basis, but of course it is the parents who cover this – thank you very much to you all!

Each team has been provided with their volunteering "assignments", but there is also a copy of the Bar, Club Day and Dinner roster at the bar and on this website - see Club Rosters.  Umpiring rosters have also been distributed.

Umpire1Umpiring Development

This season AHC is taking steps to better develop umpires within the club.

All our teams, except PL, Metro 1 and U18, are umpired by AHC players, so it makes sense that we put more effort into developing their skills.  The first step has been for players who do umpire to be actually umpiring more games during the season, while other players cover bar & BBQ duties. In the junior grades, in the main it’s our younger players that are umpiring.

To help improve the standard across all divisions, the club has brought in feedback that’s positive and encouraging for its player-umpires. From the 26th June a representative of each senior team umpired by an AHC player has given comments to the umpire on their performance and ways to improve their positioning, rules & control, communication and rapport with the players & other umpire.

At the same time, Hockey Metro is introducing some measures to improve the standard of umpiring:

  • from 1 August this year, umpires are to be registered. This means doing an on-line test.
  • from the beginning of 2011, umpires are to be accredited.
  • Clubs are to hold umpiring seminars for those not accredited.

For more information, have a look at the poster that’s on the noticeboard in the clubrooms – and look for tips on what to do to improve your umpiring and what is involved in accreditation.

We ask that all club players and supporters encourage those who are doing the umpiring and support what is being done to improve both individual skills and the overall level within the club.
